Exam overview

About the PMP exam

PMP tests judgment about how projects are actually led, and the current exam is explicitly not tied to a single methodology. Roughly half the content reflects predictive approaches and half agile or hybrid, so answers that assume a rigid waterfall sequence are frequently wrong. Candidates who prepared from older material are usually surprised by how much of the exam is situational leadership rather than process mechanics.

The three domains are weighted toward execution: Process at 41%, People at 33%, and Business Environment at 26%. The People domain in particular catches technically strong candidates, because it rewards answers involving conversation, coaching, and team empowerment over answers involving escalation or control.

The exam runs 180 questions in 230 minutes with two scheduled breaks. PMI does not publish a passing score, reporting performance by proficiency band instead, which means chasing a target percentage in practice exams is the wrong readiness signal.

Domain breakdown

What each PMP domain actually tests

Weightings follow the current published exam blueprint. Study emphasis should follow the weighting, not the domain order.

People

33%

Leading and building teams, managing conflict, supporting virtual and cross-functional teams, coaching, negotiation, removing impediments, and stakeholder engagement.

Study focusThe answer is almost always to engage directly and understand the situation before escalating or imposing a decision. Servant leadership is the operative model throughout.

Process

41%

The heaviest domain. Delivering value, managing scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, procurement, and communications across predictive, agile, and hybrid approaches.

Study focusFor each situation, first identify which delivery approach the scenario implies, because the correct action differs sharply between predictive and adaptive contexts.

Business Environment

26%

Compliance, organizational change, benefits realization, external environment changes, and aligning project outcomes with organizational strategy.

Study focusConnect project decisions to business value and benefits rather than to project completion; the exam consistently rewards outcome thinking over output thinking.

Preparation sequence

A study plan for PMP

Timings assume consistent weekly study alongside full-time work. Adjust the length, but keep the order.
  1. Phase 1

    Mindset and frameworks

    Weeks 1-3

Establish the principles-based mindset and learn to recognize predictive, agile, and hybrid contexts from a scenario description.

  2. Phase 2

    People domain

    Weeks 4-6

Work through team leadership, conflict resolution, and stakeholder engagement. Practice choosing the collaborative response by default.

  3. Phase 3

    Process depth

    Weeks 7-12

The largest block, covering delivery, scope, schedule, risk, quality, and procurement in both predictive and adaptive forms.

  4. Phase 4

    Business environment and timed practice

    Weeks 13-16

Cover compliance and benefits realization, then run full-length timed exams to build endurance across 180 questions.

Exam-day judgment

Mistakes to avoid and strategy that works

Common mistakes

  • Preparing from outdated material organized around process groups rather than the current domain structure.
  • Choosing escalation when the scenario supports a direct conversation with the person involved.
  • Assuming a predictive approach when the scenario describes an adaptive or hybrid context.
  • Chasing a target practice percentage when PMI reports proficiency bands rather than a published passing score.
  • Underestimating fatigue across 230 minutes and neglecting to practice at full length.

Exam strategy

  • Determine the delivery approach implied by the scenario before evaluating any answer.
  • Default to engaging the team or stakeholder directly rather than escalating to a sponsor.
  • Prefer answers that gather information or address root cause over answers that immediately change the plan.
  • Use the scheduled breaks deliberately; concentration decay costs more points than any single knowledge gap.
  • Treat the project manager in the question as a servant leader, not a controller.

Questions candidates ask

PMP FAQ

Is the PMP exam agile or predictive?

Both. Roughly half the exam reflects agile and hybrid approaches and half predictive. Preparing exclusively for one is the most common reason experienced project managers fail — the exam expects you to identify which context a scenario describes.

What is the passing score for the PMP?

PMI does not publish one. Results are reported as proficiency bands across the three domains, which is why practice-exam percentage targets are a poor readiness signal. Consistency across all three domains matters more than any single number.

How much experience do I need to apply?

PMI requires documented months of leading projects plus formal project management education, with thresholds that depend on your level of education. Verify the current requirements with PMI before applying, since the application is audited.

How long is the exam?

180 questions across 230 minutes with two scheduled breaks. The length is a genuine factor, so practicing at full duration at least twice before exam day is worth the time.
